Could You Qualify for Medicare or Medicaid-Covered Weight Loss Medication?
Some Medicare Part D beneficiaries may qualify for coverage of certain GLP-1 weight loss medications based on their body mass index (BMI) and certain medical conditions.
You may qualify if you:
- Have a BMI of 35 or higher.
- Have a BMI of 30 or higher along with certain health conditions, such as high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, or heart failure.
- Have a BMI of 27 or higher with certain cardiovascular conditions or prediabetes.
Coverage is determined by Medicare and individual eligibility requirements. Our providers will review your medical history, determine if you qualify, and assist with any required prior authorization.
If you are prescribed a covered medication, it should be used as part of a comprehensive weight loss program that includes healthy eating and physical activity.
Schedule an appointment to learn whether you may be eligible.
Provider requirements
If eligible, the health care provider must send a prescription for a covered GLP-1 drug to the pharmacy and, when requested, complete a prior authorization. The provider must certify that patients are using the GLP-1 drug as part of a lifestyle program that focuses on diet and exercise. The pharmacy may ask for the patient’s Medicare number or the last 4 digits of their Social Security number to help them process their prescription.
Patients will get a letter in the mail letting them know their GLP-1 drug is covered under Medicare GLP-1 Bridge. The prior authorization is valid (including refills and dose changes) through December 31, 2027, unless we change GLP-1s.
